Mime was composed in 1998 for Evelyn Glennie as an encore work for solo snare drum to accompany her performances of Rouse's fantasy for percussion and orchestra, Der gerettete Alberich. Mime is Alberich's brother in Wagner's Ring operas, and this piece makes substantial use of the “Nibelung” motive from that cycle.
