The American luthier tradition is younger than the European, but at the soloist tier it has matured into something distinct. Anton Krutz's workshop in Kansas City builds with a method that draws on European bench-built construction — hand-graduated plates, traditional varnish, individual voicing — while producing instruments suited to the projection demands of modern American concert halls and recording studios.

An Avant cello at $33,000 has a recognisable voice: powerful, projecting, even across registers, with a fundamental that anchors the section in chamber settings without dominating it. The wood is carefully sourced; the varnish is applied in the traditional way. The instrument is designed to play immediately rather than open up over years — though, like all serious instruments, it deepens with use.
