A Conservatory
composer in Paris.

Alphonse Leduc was born in Nantes in 1804, studied harmony with Anton Reicha at the Paris Conservatory, mastered the bassoon, flute and guitar — and then founded his own publishing house in 1841 after relocating from Nantes to Paris. He composed over 1,000 works himself, mainly piano pieces, and signed more than 2,000 works under his own name and the pseudonym Arthur Delaseurie.

The Leduc family kept the firm for five generations. After Alphonse died in 1868, his son Alphonse-Charles took over. The catalogue grew to include Fauré (notably the Requiem), Delibes, Offenbach, Poulenc, Messiaen, Dutilleux, Ibert and a long list of leading French composers.

Solo, chamber
and contest repertoire.

Leduc has long been associated with the Paris Conservatory contest tradition — the annual Concours repertoire commissioned for graduating students. Generations of woodwind, brass and piano players have practiced from Leduc-published Tomasi, Bozza, Françaix and Schmitt scores prepared for these examinations.

In 2014 the firm joined the Wise Music Group, alongside Novello, Chester and G. Schirmer. The catalogue continues to be edited and printed in Paris, and includes the absorbed catalogues of Heugel and Hamelle.
