Ullmann finished his one act opera 'Der zerbrochene Krug' after a play of the same title by Heinrich von Kleist shortly before his internment in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (Terezin), where he was to compose his most widely known work, the opera 'Der Kaiser von Atlantis' (The Emperor of Atlantis). 'Der zerbrochene Krug' opens with a substantial very atmospheric overture and is dominated by burlesque and comic scenes.

The work is available on an Orfeo CD in a recording conducted by Gerd Albrecht. Vocal score.
