Bamboo from East Maui,
a pocket sax.
The first Xaphoon was built in 1972 from bamboo, when a saxophonist on Maui frustrated with bamboo-flute prototypes cut a mouthpiece opening and attached a tenor sax reed. The Xaphoon was born.
Since 1975, commercial production has continued at ~1,500 bamboo instruments per year, all by hand, using local bamboo selected from the rain forests of East Maui.
