The house that
built Italian opera.
Giovanni Ricordi opened the press in 1808 above La Scala and within a decade had become the official copyist for the house. By 1820 he had bought the publishing rights to Rossini's operas. By 1860 every Italian opera of consequence reached print through Ricordi.
Verdi's entire output — Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata, Aida, Don Carlos, Otello, Falstaff — published from the Milan office. Puccini's Manon Lescaut, La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Turandot — same. The crimson Ricordi vocal score is the most iconic operatic publishing format in the world.
