Major Murray

Major Murray is a fictitious character created to help convey the idea of the traditional English march. This provides the young band with an introduction to this unique march style, with its slower cadence and understated dignity. The probability that Major Murray is Scottish is suggested by the interlude in 6/8 time, with its modal folk-like melody and stylized “bagpipe” accompaniment. (3:15)
