Liszt's orchestral poem Orpheus was premiered in 1854, inspired by an Etruscan vase depicting Orpheus as a symbol of beauty and refinement, which the composer saw in the Louvre museum. It was first transcribed for organ in 1860 by one of Liszt's students. Jean Guillou's transcription was written in 1976.
